Rapid Access Clinic for Low Back Pain

The Rapid Access Clinic for Low Back Pain (RAC-LBP) is a program to help improve the quality, access, and appropriateness of care for people with low back pain and related conditions.  

It is designed to decrease the prevalence of unmanageable low back pain, while ensuring the small percentage of those who require diagnostic imaging and specialist referral receive this care on an expedited basis.  

So far, over 10,000 PCPs in Ontario have registered, with patient satisfaction exceeding 90% provincewide. 

This program is for patients who are over the age of 18 and have had low back pain and/or related symptoms (eg. leg pain, numbness and/or tingling) for at least 6 weeks, but not more than one year.  

Patients with the following conditions are not candidates for the program: 

• Long-standing and constant low back and related symptoms (greater than 12 months in a row with no relief) 

• Pain that is a result of an accident where the injury is covered under an insurance claim (for example, motor vehicle accident or workplace injury) 

• Pregnant or within 12 months after childbirth 

• Conditions that require urgent or emergency care 

• More serious conditions such as tumours, spine infection, fractures or cauda equina syndrome are not appropriate for this model of care and are better managed with direct referral to specialists and/or through the Emergency Department. 

• This model of care is specifically for low back pain patients – neck pain and upper back pain are not managed through the RAC-LBP program. 

There are 7 locations where patients can attend. The referral will be sent to the closest location based on the patient’s postal code.  If you would like your patient to be seen at Trillium Health Partners, please indicate this on the referral.
