Frequently Asked Questions

Is NHP a mandatory program?

It is a voluntary program to help nurses get the help they need to recover from substance use and/or mental health disorders.

How will NHP help me?

There are many ways that NHP may help you, from providing resources to developing and supporting you through a treatment and monitoring plan.

How long is the program?

The program length will vary depending on your needs. Determining how long you are in the program is based on best practices of what is needed to support effective treatment and recovery from substance use and/or mental health disorders.

Am I able to continue my nursing practice while participating in NHP?

If you are practicing at the time of enrolment you may continue working unless NHP identifies potential risk to safe practice and you have been advised by NHP not to work. Should this happen, your case manager will discuss why you can’t work and how you will be able to return to practice.

What services do I pay for myself?

Some costs may be covered, while others might not. Your case manager will give you a clear outline of what is included and what might come out of pocket.

Who should my employer speak with if they have questions?

They can connect directly with the program team to learn how it works and how to support you through it.

What if I am in a mental health emergency?

If it’s urgent, please contact emergency services, a local crisis line, or go to the closest hospital. You can reach out to your case manager once you are in a safe space.
